Sensor How-To

How to Set Up and Use the ecobee SmartSensor for Rooms

The SmartSensor for Rooms reports the temperature and occupancy of whichever room it’s in, so your ecobee thermostat can balance hot and cold spots instead of just reacting to the one room it’s mounted in. This guide covers pairing it in the ecobee app and putting it to work. For where to physically place it, see the quick-start guide in the box.

Step-by-Step: Pairing a SmartSensor

This covers adding and naming the sensor in the app. Where to physically set or mount it is in the sensor’s own quick-start guide, not here.

Step 1

Open the sensor menu

In the ecobee app, go to the home screen and tap Add a Sensor, or go to Main Menu > Sensors > Add Sensor. You’ll need an ecobee account and a thermostat already on Wi-Fi.

Step 2

Scan or enter the sensor’s code

Scan the QR code on the sensor’s pull tab with your phone’s camera, or type in the 8-digit code printed in the battery compartment if scanning doesn’t work.

Step 3

Pull the battery tab

Pulling the tab activates the battery. The app will detect the sensor within about 3 minutes; if it doesn’t show up, give it a little longer before trying again.

Step 4

Name it and assign comfort settings

Name the sensor after the room it’s in (Bedroom, Office, Nursery), then choose which comfort settings — Home, Away, Sleep — it should participate in. A sensor only affects the average temperature for the comfort settings it’s assigned to.

Daily-Use Features

Balancing hot and cold rooms

The thermostat averages the temperature from every sensor that’s participating in the active comfort setting, so a stuffy bedroom or a chilly office pulls the system toward comfort where people actually are.

Occupancy detection

Each sensor can tell when a room is occupied, which feeds Smart Home & Away and helps the system know when the house is actually empty rather than guessing from the thermostat’s hallway alone.

Sensor participation

You can turn a sensor’s participation on or off per comfort setting at any time under Main Menu > Sensors. A sensor that isn’t participating still shows its reading, it just doesn’t affect the average.

Checking a room’s reading

Tap the thermostat’s display or open Sensors in the app any time to see each room’s current temperature side by side.

Tips for Best Use

  • Keep sensors away from vents, windows, exterior walls, lamps and direct sunlight, which all throw off the reading.
  • Place one in whichever room you actually spend the most time in, like a bedroom or home office, not just an empty hallway.
  • Name sensors clearly by room so you’re not guessing which is which later in the app.
  • If a room runs consistently hot or cold on purpose (a sunroom, a basement), leave that sensor out of your main comfort settings so it doesn’t skew the average.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Pairing the sensor but never assigning it to a Comfort Setting — an unassigned sensor won’t influence temperature control at all.
  • Mounting it near a heat source, a sunny window, a vent, or a drafty exterior door, which skews its reading.
  • Forgetting to remove the battery tab before pairing, which keeps the sensor from powering on.
  • Assuming one sensor “fixes” a room that’s actually short on airflow or insulation — it reports the room accurately, but it can’t correct a duct or airflow problem by itself.

Troubleshooting

  • Sensor won’t pair. Make sure the pull tab is fully removed, you’re within range of the thermostat, and the 8-digit code was entered correctly if you typed it instead of scanning.
  • Reading looks wrong or jumps around. Move the sensor away from vents, direct sun or any heat-generating device nearby, and give it a few minutes to settle after moving it.
  • Low battery warning. Replace the CR2477 coin-cell battery; a fresh one typically lasts about 3 years.
  • Sensor shows offline. It may simply be out of range; move it closer to the thermostat, or to a central spot in the home with fewer walls in between.

SmartSensor Questions

How many SmartSensors can I add?

You can pair more than one SmartSensor to a single ecobee thermostat, which lets you balance several rooms at once instead of just one.

Does the sensor need Wi-Fi of its own?

No. It communicates directly with the thermostat over its own radio signal, not your home Wi-Fi. Only the thermostat itself needs to be online.

Can I use it in a room without an ecobee thermostat?

No, it only works paired with a compatible ecobee smart thermostat. It’s a companion accessory, not a stand-alone sensor.

What’s the difference between this and the SmartSensor for Doors & Windows?

This one reads room temperature and occupancy. The SmartSensor for Doors & Windows detects whether an entryway is open or closed and can pause your system if one’s left open.
