Signs Your Dehumidifier Needs Repair

A dehumidifier that runs but does not dry the air is the most common call. Here is the full list.

  • It runs but the humidity does not drop. No water in the drain, or a trickle. The compressor may not be running, the coil may be iced, or the airflow may be blocked.
  • Ice on the coil. A dehumidifier pulls water by cooling air below its dew point. Low airflow from a dirty filter, a cool space, or a refrigerant problem turns that water to ice.
  • Water on the floor. A clogged or kinked drain, a failed condensate pump, or a cracked drain pan.
  • It never shuts off. A humidity sensor reading wrong, a control set too low, or a unit that is too small for the moisture load, often in a basement with a water problem.
  • It never turns on. No power, a tripped breaker, a failed control board, or a sensor that thinks the air is already dry.
  • Loud, rattling or humming with no airflow. A fan motor that has failed or a fan wheel loaded with dust, or a compressor trying to start and failing.
  • An error code on the display. AprilAire units report specific faults. We read them and confirm the cause before replacing anything.
  • Wi-Fi control has dropped. Router changes, a firmware update or a control board issue.
  • A musty smell from the unit. Standing water in the pan or drain, or a filter that has not been changed.
  • Warm, humid air coming out. Normal exhaust is warm, but if the humidity is not falling, the refrigeration side is not working.

The Most Common Causes We See

Dirty filter and airflow

A loaded filter or a blocked intake starves the coil of air. The coil gets too cold, ices over, and the unit removes nothing. A new filter and a clear intake solve more calls than any other repair, which is why we change it at every tune-up.

Cold spaces

Frozen coil

Crawl spaces and basements below about 60°F push the coil toward freezing even with good airflow. Some units have a defrost cycle; some do not. We confirm the cause, since ice from low refrigerant looks the same as ice from low airflow.

Water

Drain and condensate pump

A gravity drain with a clog or sag, or a condensate pump whose float stuck or motor failed, puts water on the floor. We clear or re-run the drain and replace the pump when needed.

Control

Sensor and control board

A humidity sensor that drifts reads the air wrong, so the unit runs forever or never starts. A control board can fail from a power surge. We test the sensor against a calibrated meter before we replace anything.

Mechanical

Fan motor and compressor

The fan moves air across the coil; the compressor makes it cold. A failed fan is a reasonable repair. A failed compressor on an older unit is usually where replacement makes more sense.

Sizing

Undersized for the load

A unit that runs constantly and keeps up with nothing may be fine. It may just be too small for a basement that is taking on water. We measure and tell you which.

What to Expect on the Visit

We test the refrigeration side, the airflow side and the drain before we quote anything.

1. We ask what it is doing. How long it has run, what the display shows, whether water is draining, and what the humidity reads in the space. That points to airflow, refrigeration, drain or control.

2. We check airflow first. Filter, intake, fan operation and, on ducted units, the duct connections and dampers. Most no-water calls end here.

3. We check the coil and refrigeration. Coil temperature, ice, compressor operation and amp draw. If the coil is iced we let it thaw and find out why before it happens again.

4. We check the drain. Gravity slope, clogs, the condensate pump and its float, and the pan. Water on the floor is fixed at the source.

5. You get a flat price. In writing, before work starts. The repair is quoted flat-rate, and you approve that price before any work. Filters, pumps, sensors and fans are usually on the truck or a quick order.

6. We repair, reset and verify. The unit is run long enough to confirm it is pulling water and draining, the control is set to the 40 to 60% RH range, and Wi-Fi is reconnected if it dropped. What Dehumidifier Repair Costs

A flat diagnostic fee, then a flat-rate repair price you approve before work starts. During office hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday) the service call is $130; weekday evenings after 5 p.m. it is $180, and nights, weekends and holidays are $260. Each includes 30 minutes of travel and 30 minutes of diagnostics, and parts are extra.

Every dehumidifier call starts with a flat diagnostic fee that covers finding the problem. The repair is quoted separately, flat-rate, for you to approve before any work. Repairs are flat-rate line items: a filter, a drain clearing or re-run, a condensate pump, a sensor, a fan motor or a control board. You see each price before we start.

Compressor and refrigerant repairs are the expensive end. On a unit under warranty or only a few years old they can make sense. On an older unit, a compressor repair often costs a large share of a new AprilAire dehumidifier with a fresh warranty, and we will show you both numbers.

Repair or Replace the Dehumidifier?

The compressor is the dividing line.

Repair it when the problem is a filter, airflow, drain, condensate pump, fan, sensor or control. These are modest parts, and the unit has years left.

Replace it when the compressor or the refrigerant circuit has failed on a unit past its warranty, when the unit is a portable that was never sized for the space, or when it is simply too small for the load. Use the same rule we use for furnaces and air conditioners: if the repair costs more than half of a new unit, replace it. Whole-Home Dehumidifier Repair FAQs

Why is my dehumidifier running but not removing water?

Usually low airflow from a dirty filter or blocked intake, which ices the coil. Other causes are a compressor that is not running, a refrigerant problem, or a sensor that never lets the unit reach full operation. We check airflow first, then refrigeration.

Why is there ice on my dehumidifier coil?

The coil is getting colder than it should. That happens with a dirty filter, a blocked intake, a space below about 60°F, or low refrigerant. Ice from low airflow and ice from low refrigerant look identical, so we test rather than guess.

Why is my dehumidifier leaking water on the floor?

A clogged or sagging drain line, a failed condensate pump or a stuck float, or a cracked pan. We clear or re-run the drain and replace the pump when needed so the water leaves on its own.

How much does dehumidifier repair cost?

A flat diagnostic fee covers finding the problem, and the repair is quoted flat-rate for you to approve before any work. Filters, drains, pumps, sensors, fans and controls are flat-rate items you see in writing first. Compressor repairs are the expensive end and get compared to replacement.

Should I repair or replace my dehumidifier?

Repair for filters, airflow, drains, pumps, fans, sensors and controls. Replace when the compressor or refrigerant circuit fails on an older unit, or when the repair costs more than half of a new unit. See dehumidifier installation.

Why does my dehumidifier never shut off?

Either the space has more moisture than the unit can handle, the sensor is reading wrong, or the setting is too low. A basement taking on water will keep any dehumidifier running. We measure the humidity and the unit’s output to tell you which.

How often should the dehumidifier filter be changed?

A few times a year in a typical basement, more often in a dusty crawl space. On the maintenance plan we change it at your spring tune-up before the humid months.

Can my dehumidifier work in a cold basement or crawl space?

Most units lose capacity below about 60°F and can ice up. Some models have a defrost cycle. If your space runs cold, we may recommend a setting change, a model with defrost, or shutting it down in the coldest months when humidity is low anyway.

What humidity should the dehumidifier be set to?

Between 40 and 60% relative humidity. Setting it lower makes the unit run longer for little benefit. Above 60% is where mold and musty smells begin.

My AprilAire dehumidifier shows an error code. What should I do?

Note the code and call us. AprilAire units report specific faults for sensors, airflow and the refrigeration side. We confirm the cause before replacing any part.

Can you fix the Wi-Fi on my dehumidifier?

Usually. Most drops are router changes or a stalled update. If the control board itself has failed, that is a parts repair we price before doing.

Is a musty smell from the dehumidifier a problem?

It means standing water in the pan or drain, or a filter that has not been changed. Cleaning the pan, clearing the drain and a new filter usually fix it.
