What an Air Source Heat Pump Does
An air source heat pump works like an air conditioner that can run in reverse. ComEd notes that because it moves heat instead of making it, a heat pump can be up to four times more efficient than traditional heating and cooling equipment.
Summer
It pulls heat out of your home and releases it outdoors, just like central air.
Winter
It pulls heat from the outdoor air, even when it’s cold outside, and moves it indoors.
Uses Your Ductwork
A centrally ducted heat pump serves the same rooms your vents already reach.
Better Dehumidification
Variable-speed systems run longer at lower speeds, which pulls more moisture out of summer air.
How a Dual Fuel System Works
A dual fuel (or hybrid) system pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace. Each one heats your home when it does the job best.
The Heat Pump Leads
Through spring, fall and milder winter days, the heat pump heats your home on electricity.
The Furnace Takes the Deep Cold
When the outdoor temperature drops below a set point, the gas furnace takes over.
You Set the Switchover
We set the switchover temperature with you. A higher setting leans more on gas. A lower one leans more on the heat pump.
Built-In Backup
If the heat pump ever needs service in January, the furnace can still heat the house.
How much you save depends on local electric and gas prices and the switchover temperature you choose. Cooling costs usually drop too, because the heat pump replaces an older air conditioner.

What is a dual fuel heat pump system?
It pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump heats your home most of the year, and the furnace takes over below a switchover temperature we set with you.
Can an S-Series heat pump work with my existing furnace?
Often, yes. We check your furnace’s condition, blower and controls and the indoor coil before recommending it. If the furnace is near the end of its life, we’ll quote a matched Amana gas furnace instead.
Does a dual fuel system qualify for the ComEd discount?
Yes, if the heat pump meets ComEd’s efficiency and refrigerant requirements. ComEd’s discount applies to centrally ducted heat pumps that replace or work alongside a furnace. Furnace discounts come from your gas utility.
Which ComEd tier does the S-Series fall into?
It depends on the certified AHRI rating of the outdoor unit and the indoor coil or air handler it’s matched with, plus your heating tonnage. We confirm the tier and discount on your quote before you commit.
Is the S-Series loud?
No. The inverter compressor spends most of its time at lower speeds, and quiet mode offers up to 3 sound levels, as low as 45 dBA on AZV6S and AZV7S models.
