No Heat: Is It an Emergency or Can It Wait Until Morning?

Not every furnace problem needs a truck at midnight. Here is how we think about it, so you can make the call with a clear head.

Call now if:

  • It is below freezing outside and the furnace is not producing any heat
  • The house is already down in the 50s and dropping
  • You have infants, elderly family members or anyone with a health condition at home
  • You smell gas, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding
  • There is water pouring from the furnace area, or you see scorching or smoke
  • You have no backup heat, and pipes in exterior walls or a crawl space are at risk

It can usually wait until the morning if:

  • The furnace runs but is louder than usual or cycling more often
  • One room is cold but the rest of the house is holding temperature
  • It is mild outside and a space heater in the main room keeps you comfortable overnight
  • The furnace failed once, reset, and has run normally since

What to Do Right Now

Safety first. Then keep the house from getting colder while you wait.

Smell gas? Leave the house right away, call 911 from outside, and call your gas utility’s emergency line from outside before calling us.

Carbon monoxide alarm going off? Get everyone outside, call 911 or your gas utility, and do not run the furnace again until it has been inspected.

Protect your pipes. Below freezing, a house with no heat can drop into pipe-freezing territory within a day, faster in a drafty older home. Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls, let the faucet farthest from the water main drip, and keep interior doors open so any heat you have spreads. If you have a fireplace or a safe space heater, use it in the room where the family will stay.

Use space heaters carefully. Plug them directly into the wall, never into a power strip or extension cord, keep them three feet from anything that burns, and do not leave them running unattended or overnight. Never use a gas oven, grill or camp stove for heat.

Do not keep resetting the furnace. One reset is fine. Repeated resets can hide a safety fault, and a furnace that keeps locking out is telling you something is wrong.

Check These Before You Call

About one no-heat call in five is something a homeowner can fix in a minute. Run through this list first. It may save you a visit, and if it doesn’t, it tells us where to start.

Thermostat

Set to Heat, not Off or Cool, with the setpoint at least a few degrees above the room temperature. If the screen is blank, replace the batteries. If the fan is set to On, switch it to Auto so cold air stops blowing between cycles.

Breaker and power switch

Check the furnace breaker in the electrical panel. Then find the light-switch-style power switch on or near the furnace. It gets bumped off more often than you would think.

Filter

A filter packed with dust can overheat the furnace and trip the high limit. Pull it out and look through it. If you cannot see light, replace it, then reset the furnace.

Blower door switch

The lower door has a safety switch that cuts power when the door is off. If the door is not fully seated after a filter change, the furnace will not run. Push it firmly into place.

Condensate drain and float switch

On a 90%+ furnace, a clogged condensate trap or a full condensate pump trips a float switch or the pressure switch and shuts the furnace down. If the pump reservoir is full or the drain hose is kinked, that is your problem.

One reset

Turn the furnace power switch off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on, and watch. Note the blink pattern on the status light if it fails again. That code points us at the fault.

If it runs, great. If it fails again, stop and call. Tell us the blink code, what you heard and what you already checked.

What the Technician Does When We Arrive

An emergency visit is the same careful diagnosis as a daytime visit, done faster because we know you are cold.

Diagnosis. The technician confirms the thermostat call, then follows the furnace’s own sequence: power and fuses, the inducer, the pressure switch, the igniter, the gas valve and the flame signal. We read the fault history on the control board, check the filter, and look at the vent and the condensate on 90%+ furnaces. On older 80% furnaces we inspect the heat exchanger and draft. This takes 30 to 60 minutes on most furnaces.

Price before work. We show you the failed part, explain why it failed, and give you a flat-rate price in writing. The repair is quoted flat-rate, and you approve that price before any work. Nothing is done without your yes.

The repair. Our vans carry igniters, flame sensors, capacitors, pressure switches, limits and universal parts for the brands common in Fox Valley basements. Most no-heat repairs are finished the same visit. If a specific board or motor has to be ordered, we tell you the lead time and, where it is safe, get the furnace running until it arrives.

Testing. A full heat cycle, flame signal, temperature rise, safeties opening and closing, and on condensing furnaces a draining trap. We test for carbon monoxide before we leave. Then the doors go back on and you get an invoice listing the part, the readings and any recommendations.

What Emergency Furnace Repair Costs

Flat-rate, in writing, before work starts. After-hours service calls are priced higher than business-hours calls, and you hear that rate before we dispatch.

Every visit starts with a flat diagnostic fee. During office hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday) the service call is $130; weekday evenings after 5 p.m. it is $180, and nights, weekends and holidays are $260. Each includes 30 minutes of travel and 30 minutes of diagnostics, and parts are extra. It covers the trip and the time to find the actual problem. The repair is then quoted flat-rate, and you approve that price before any work. If you decide not to repair, the diagnostic fee is all you owe, and you keep the written findings.

Most common furnace repairs, including igniters, flame sensors, pressure switches, capacitors, inducer motors and control boards, typically land between about $300 and $1,800 parts and labor. Blower motors and complete inducer assemblies sit at the top of that range. A cracked heat exchanger usually means replacement rather than repair.

The First Cold Snap and Sub-Zero Nights

Demand for no-heat service in the Fox Valley is not spread evenly across the winter. Two stretches matter.

The first cold snap, October to November. Every furnace in Kane, McHenry, DuPage and DeKalb counties starts its first real run of the season within the same few days. Igniters that got brittle over the summer crack, flame sensors that oxidized fail to prove flame, and capacitors that were marginal in April give up. Call volume spikes and arrival windows stretch. A fall tune-up in September is how you skip this week entirely.

Sub-zero nights, December to February. Elgin’s design temperature is near 0°F, and the furnace runs almost nonstop. Anything worn finally fails, and this is when a no-heat call is most urgent because the house cools fastest. We run 24/7 through it, and plan members go to the front of the line.

Is no heat an emergency?

When it is below freezing outside, yes. A house with no heat loses temperature fast, and once the interior drops toward the 40s, water lines in exterior walls and unheated spaces are at risk. If it is mild out or you have a safe backup heat source, it can often wait for the next morning.

What should I do while I wait for the technician?

Keep interior doors open so heat spreads, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls, let a faucet drip if the house is getting cold, and use space heaters safely, never with an extension cord and never unattended. Do not use the oven or a grill for heat.

What should I check before calling for emergency furnace repair?

Thermostat set to Heat with a setpoint above room temperature and fresh batteries; the furnace breaker and the power switch on or near the furnace; a clean filter; the blower door fully seated so the door switch is pressed; and on a high-efficiency furnace, that the condensate drain or pump is not full. My furnace is blowing cold air. Is that an emergency?

It means the burners are not lighting or not staying lit while the blower runs. Common causes are a cracked igniter, a dirty flame sensor, a tripped pressure switch or a stuck gas valve. Check that the thermostat fan is on Auto, not On. If the house is getting cold and it is freezing outside, call.

My furnace keeps clicking but will not light. What does that mean?

The igniter or spark is trying and failing, or the gas valve is not opening. After three failed tries most furnaces lock out for about an hour. Note the blink pattern on the status light before you reset, and tell us what it was.

How fast can you get here?

It depends on where you are and how many no-heat calls are already in the queue. On a normal night we can usually be there within a few hours. During the first cold snap in October or November and on sub-zero nights, the queue is longer and we tell you honestly where you are in it.

What if I smell gas?

Leave the house right away, call 911 from outside, and call your gas utility’s emergency line from outside before calling us. Do not flip switches or use a phone inside. We will come out once the utility has cleared the house.

My carbon monoxide alarm is going off. Should I still call you?

Get everyone outside first and call 911 or your gas utility. Once the house has been cleared, call us. A cracked heat exchanger, blocked vent or backdrafting flue can put CO into the house, and the furnace should not run again until it has been inspected.

Can you fix my furnace the same night?

Usually. Our vans carry igniters, flame sensors, capacitors, pressure switches, limits and common universal parts, so most no-heat repairs are finished on the first visit. If a brand-specific board or motor has to be ordered, we tell you the lead time and, where it is safe, leave the furnace running until it arrives.

Do you fix furnaces you did not install?

What if the furnace is too old to be worth repairing?
