Signs Your Thermostat Needs Repair

The thermostat gets blamed for a lot. Sometimes it is guilty. Here is what we see most.

  • The screen is blank. No 24-volt power reaching the thermostat: a blown low-voltage fuse on the furnace board, a tripped float switch, an open furnace door switch, or a missing C-wire on a thermostat that finally drained its battery.
  • It says “no power to Rc” or “no power to Rh” or shows a wiring alert. The thermostat is telling you the R wire is dead or landed on the wrong terminal.
  • The furnace or AC turns on and off every few minutes. Short cycling, often from a cycle-rate or staging setting that does not match the equipment, or from a thermostat mounted over a draft or a supply register.
  • Heat comes on when you ask for cooling, or the reverse. On a heat pump this is almost always the O/B reversing valve setting or wire.
  • Your heat pump’s auxiliary heat runs constantly. No aux lockout, no balance point, or the W wire jumped to the wrong place after a DIY install.
  • It worked until someone replaced it. The most common call we get. A wire on the wrong terminal or a missing jumper.
  • Wi-Fi keeps dropping. Sometimes the router, sometimes low voltage at the thermostat browning out the radio.
  • The temperature reading is wrong. A thermostat on an exterior wall, in sunlight, or next to a lamp reads the wrong room.
  • The system never shuts off, or never starts. A stuck relay in the thermostat or a control board problem downstream of it.
  • It will not hold a schedule. Usually a settings or app issue, occasionally a thermostat that resets every time it loses power.

The Most Common Causes We See

Most common

No power or no C-wire

Smart thermostats need a common wire for steady 24-volt power. Without it the thermostat drains, reboots, drops Wi-Fi or goes blank. We run a C-wire where practical or install a power adapter at the furnace, and we replace the low-voltage fuse if a short blew it.

DIY installs

Wrong wiring

R and Rc swapped, W and Y crossed, a jumper removed, or the O/B wire on the wrong terminal. We label and verify every wire at the equipment board, not just at the wall plate, and fix what is crossed.

Settings

Staging and cycle rates

A two-stage furnace on single-stage settings, a cycle rate set for a boiler, or a compressor protection delay turned off. These cause short cycling, cold drafts and high bills. We configure the thermostat to the equipment.

Heat pumps

Aux heat and balance point

Aux heat lockout not set, balance point missing on a dual-fuel system, or emergency heat left on since a cold week in February. We set the lockout and balance point so the heat pump does the work and the backup stays backup.

Not the thermostat

Equipment safeties

A full condensate pan tripping the float switch, an open furnace door switch, a tripped high limit or a blown board fuse all look like a dead thermostat. We check the equipment before we blame the thermostat.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi and app problems

A router that changed bands, a firmware update that stalled, or low voltage at the thermostat. We get it back online and confirm it stays there.

What to Check Before You Call

Five minutes here can save you a service call.

  • Batteries. If your thermostat takes batteries, replace them even if the screen is on.
  • Mode and setpoint. Confirm it is set to Heat or Cool, not Off, and that the setpoint is above or below the room temperature.
  • Breaker. Check the furnace or air handler breaker and, in summer, the outdoor unit breaker and disconnect.
  • Furnace door. The blower door on a furnace has a safety switch. If the door is not fully seated, the thermostat loses power.
  • Filter. A plugged filter trips the high limit, which can look like a thermostat problem.
  • Condensate. Water in the pan under an AC coil or furnace trips a float switch that cuts the thermostat circuit.
  • Router. For Wi-Fi drops, restart the router before anything else.

What to Expect on the Visit

We diagnose the whole low-voltage circuit, not just the thermostat, and you approve the price before any work.

1. We ask what happened. When it started, whether anything was replaced, whether the problem is in one mode only. A thermostat that failed the day after a DIY swap is a different job from one that faded over months.

2. We test at the thermostat. Voltage between R and C, which wires are live, what the thermostat reports in its settings menu, and the physical wiring behind the plate.

3. We test at the equipment. The furnace or air handler board, the low-voltage fuse, the door switch, the float switch and the transformer output. This is where the actual cause usually lives.

4. You get a price. Flat-rate, in writing, before we do anything. The repair is quoted flat-rate, and you approve that price before any work.

5. We fix it and run every mode. Heat, cool, fan, aux or emergency heat, and any accessory the thermostat controls, verified at the equipment. Settings are corrected and explained.

6. Replacement if it earns it. If the thermostat itself has failed, or it cannot run your equipment properly, we recommend a replacement and can usually install one on the same visit. See smart thermostat installation.

What Thermostat Repair Costs

A flat diagnostic fee to find the problem, then a flat-rate repair price you approve before work starts. During office hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday) the service call is $130; weekday evenings after 5 p.m. it is $180, and nights, weekends and holidays are $260. Each includes 30 minutes of travel and 30 minutes of diagnostics, and parts are extra.

Every thermostat repair starts with a flat diagnostic fee. The repair is quoted separately, flat-rate, for you to approve before any work. Most thermostat calls end with a rewire, a fuse, a C-wire or power adapter, or a settings correction, and those are priced as flat-rate line items you see before we start.

When the thermostat itself is dead, the repair is a replacement thermostat plus installation and configuration. We carry common models on the truck. If the failure turned out to be at the furnace or heat pump instead, we price that repair the same way and you decide.

Repair the Thermostat or Replace It?

Most of the time the fix is cheaper than a new thermostat. Sometimes replacing is the honest answer.

Repair it when the thermostat is sound and the problem is power, wiring or configuration. That is the majority of calls. A thermostat that only needs a C-wire or a corrected O/B setting does not need to be replaced.

Replace it when the screen or relays have failed, when the manufacturer no longer supports the app, when it cannot run your equipment properly, such as a basic thermostat on a variable-speed heat pump, or when the thermostat is a mechanical or early digital model that cannot hold a schedule. A replacement done with new equipment also earns an add-on to the ComEd or Nicor Gas discount when it is on the same invoice; a thermostat on its own does not. Smart Thermostat Repair FAQs

Why is my thermostat screen blank?

It is not getting 24-volt power. Common causes are a blown low-voltage fuse on the furnace board, an open furnace door switch, a tripped condensate float switch, a tripped breaker, or a thermostat with no C-wire that finally drained. We test at the thermostat and at the equipment to find which.

What does “no power to Rc” mean on my thermostat?

The thermostat is not seeing voltage on the R wire. Either the equipment is not sending power because a fuse or safety opened, or the wire is broken or on the wrong terminal. It is one of the most common calls after a DIY install.

Why does my furnace short cycle after installing a smart thermostat?

Usually a cycle-rate or staging setting that does not match the furnace, or a thermostat located over a supply register or in a draft. Occasionally it is a furnace safety tripping and not the thermostat at all. We check both.

Why is my heat pump running auxiliary heat all the time?

The aux heat lockout or balance point was never set, emergency heat was left on, or the W wire is landed wrong. Electric backup heat is expensive to run. We set the lockout so the heat pump carries the load. See heat pump repair.

Can you fix a thermostat I installed myself?

Yes. Crossed wires, missing jumpers and wrong settings after a DIY install are the most common thermostat repairs we do. We verify every wire at the equipment and correct the configuration.

How much does thermostat repair cost?

Do you repair Nest, ecobee and Honeywell thermostats?

Yes. We service ecobee, Google Nest, Honeywell Home and the Amana and Daikin communicating thermostats, along with the furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps they control, on any brand of equipment.

Why does my thermostat keep losing Wi-Fi?

Often the router, sometimes a stalled firmware update, and sometimes low voltage at the thermostat because there is no C-wire. If the thermostat reboots when the equipment starts, it is a power problem, not a network problem.

Could the problem be my furnace and not the thermostat?

Often, yes. A float switch, door switch, high limit or blown board fuse cuts power to the thermostat and looks exactly like a dead thermostat. We test the equipment before we blame the thermostat. See furnace repair if the furnace is the fault.

Should I repair or replace my thermostat?

Repair when the problem is power, wiring or settings, which is most of the time. Replace when the thermostat has failed, is no longer supported, or cannot run your equipment properly. See smart thermostat installation.

Is there a rebate if I replace my thermostat?

Not for a thermostat on its own. A qualifying ENERGY STAR thermostat adds to the ComEd or Nicor Gas instant discount only when it is installed on the same invoice as qualifying heat pump or furnace equipment.

Why does my thermostat read a different temperature than the room?

Placement. A thermostat on an exterior wall, in direct sun, near a lamp or over a register reads its own environment. Some models let us apply an offset or add a remote sensor; sometimes the fix is relocating it.
