In 2026, ComEd takes $900 to $2,000 off a qualifying ducted heat pump, $500 or $1,000 off a qualifying ductless system, and another $75 when we install a qualifying ENERGY STAR smart thermostat with it. There is no application and no waiting for a check: as a ComEd Heat Pump-Trained Contractor, we take the discount straight off your invoice. Here is what decides which tier you land in, what the equipment has to meet, and which Fox Valley towns are left out.
The 2026 ComEd Heat Pump Discount Tiers
The discount is per qualifying unit, and the tier depends on two things: the efficiency rating of the equipment and its heating capacity. Ducted systems earn more than ductless, and bigger heating capacity earns more than smaller.
| System | What decides the tier | 2026 instant discount |
|---|---|---|
| Ducted heat pump | Efficiency tier and heating capacity; top tier at 2.5 heating tons or more | $900 to $2,000 |
| Ductless or mixed-use, under 1.5 heating tons | At least 17 SEER2, 9.4 EER2 and 9 HSPF2 | $500 |
| Ductless or mixed-use, 1.5 heating tons and up | At least 17 SEER2, 9.4 EER2 and 9 HSPF2 | $1,000 |
| ENERGY STAR smart thermostat | Installed by us with a qualifying heat pump | +$75 |
A ducted system is the familiar setup: an outdoor heat pump paired with an indoor air handler or a gas furnace, using your existing ductwork. Ductless means wall, ceiling or floor heads fed by an outdoor unit, with no ducts at all. Mixed-use is a ductless outdoor unit serving a combination of head types. Our CY2026 ComEd instant discounts page keeps the current tier details.
Why Heating Tonnage Decides the Tier
Air conditioners are sized to cooling. In northern Illinois, heat pumps are sized to heating, because the heating load on a 0°F design night is the bigger number. ComEd follows the same logic: the tier is set by the unit’s heating capacity, not its cooling rating. A ducted heat pump of 2.5 heating tons or more in the right efficiency tier earns the full $2,000; smaller ducted units earn less, down to $900.
That is one reason we size the house before quoting equipment on a heat pump installation. The sizing tells us what the house actually needs at 5°F and 17°F, and the heating capacity of the model that meets that need is what lands you in a tier. We do not upsize equipment to chase a discount; an oversized heat pump short cycles and costs you comfort and efficiency for 15 years. But when the load calls for a 2.5-ton or larger cold-climate unit, which is common in the ranches and split-levels around here, the top tier is often where a properly sized system lands anyway.
What the Equipment Has to Meet
Three requirements, and every system we install is built to satisfy all three.
Requirement 1
AHRI-matched system
The outdoor heat pump and the indoor coil, air handler or furnace must be a combination listed in the AHRI directory with a certified efficiency rating. A mismatched pairing has no rating, so it cannot qualify for any tier. We quote matched systems only, and the AHRI certificate number goes on your paperwork.
Requirement 2
Refrigerant at or below 700 GWP
The refrigerant’s global warming potential has to be 700 or lower. R-32 qualifies; the older R-410A does not. The Amana S-Series inverter heat pumps we install run on R-32, as do current Daikin ductless systems, so this requirement is met by default on our quotes.
Requirement 3
A participating contractor
The installation has to be done by a contractor enrolled in the ComEd program. Rest Assured HVAC is a ComEd Heat Pump-Trained Contractor, which is what lets us apply the discount at the point of sale instead of sending you off to file paperwork. A system installed by a non-participating contractor gets no discount.
Because there is no application, there is nothing for you to fill out, mail or upload. The discount appears as a line item on the invoice, the invoice total is what you pay, and we handle the reporting with ComEd.
St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia: Read This First
CY2026 ComEd discounts only apply to ComEd customers. St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia each run their own municipal electric utility, so homes in those three towns are not on ComEd and are not eligible for these discounts. We install the same equipment there, and the equipment performs exactly the same; the invoice simply will not carry a ComEd line.
If you are in one of those towns and heat with gas, the Nicor Gas side of a dual-fuel job is unaffected, and manufacturer promotions still apply. If you are anywhere else in Kane, McHenry, DuPage or DeKalb counties and your electric bill comes from ComEd, you are in.
Stacking: Nicor Gas on the Furnace, Daikin on the Ductless
The CY2026 ComEd discount is on the heat pump. It does not prevent other discounts on other equipment on the same job, and two of them come up often.
- Dual-fuel systems. A dual-fuel heat pump and furnace pairs a cold-climate heat pump with a high-efficiency gas furnace that takes over below the balance point. CY2026 ComEd discounts the heat pump, and Nicor Gas discounts the furnace on the same invoice: $225 on a furnace rated 97% AFUE or higher, or $150 at 95% AFUE, rising to $275 or $200 with a qualifying smart thermostat. Each utility discounts its own equipment. See Nicor Gas instant discounts.
- Daikin ductless. When Daikin runs a manufacturer promotion on ductless systems, it is separate from ComEd and can be combined on a qualifying ductless mini-split installation. Current offers are posted on our Daikin ductless rebates page; they change through the year, so we confirm what is active on the date we quote.
- Smart thermostat. A qualifying ENERGY STAR smart thermostat we install adds $75 to the CY2026 ComEd discount. On a dual-fuel job it also raises the CY2026 Nicor Gas furnace discount by $50, so one thermostat helps on both sides.
Here is what that looks like in practice. A homeowner in Elgin replaces a 20-year-old furnace and air conditioner with a dual-fuel system: a 3-ton Amana S-Series R-32 heat pump matched to a 97% AFUE furnace, with a qualifying smart thermostat. The heat pump qualifies at the top tier, so the invoice shows a CY2026 ComEd discount of $2,000, plus $75 for the thermostat. The furnace earns the CY2026 Nicor Gas discount of $275 with the thermostat on the same invoice. That is $2,350 off the written quote, taken at the point of sale, with nothing to file. The same job in St. Charles would show only the $275 CY2026 Nicor Gas discount.
What is left after the discounts can be financed. You can prequalify in about 2 minutes with no impact to your credit score, and the quote we hand you already shows every discount subtracted, so the number you finance is the real one.
Thinking About a Heat Pump This Year?
Every heat pump quote we write is free, in writing, and shows the CY2026 ComEd discount line by line, including which tier your system qualifies for and why. Request a free quote and we will size the system to your home before we talk equipment.
Program funding is limited and the discount amounts can change during the year, so a quote dated today locks in what we know today.
CY2026 ComEd Heat Pump Discount FAQs
How much is the ComEd heat pump discount in 2026?
Qualifying ducted heat pumps earn $900 to $2,000 depending on efficiency tier and heating capacity, with the full $2,000 on a ducted unit of 2.5 heating tons or more. Qualifying ductless or mixed-use systems earn $500 under 1.5 heating tons or $1,000 at 1.5 tons and up. A qualifying ENERGY STAR smart thermostat we install adds $75.
Do I have to apply for the CY2026 ComEd discount?
No. There is no application. As a ComEd Heat Pump-Trained Contractor we take the discount directly off your invoice, and we handle the reporting to ComEd.
What does a heat pump need to qualify for the CY2026 ComEd discount?
An AHRI-matched outdoor and indoor pairing, a refrigerant with a global warming potential of 700 or less such as R-32, and installation by a participating contractor. Ductless systems also need at least 17 SEER2, 9.4 EER2 and 9 HSPF2.
Can I get the CY2026 ComEd discount in St. Charles, Geneva or Batavia?
No. Those three towns run their own municipal electric utilities, so their residents are not CY2026 ComEd customers and the ComEd discount does not apply. We install the same equipment there; the invoice just won’t include a ComEd line.
Can I combine the CY2026 ComEd discount with the Nicor Gas furnace discount?
Yes, on a dual-fuel system. CY2026 ComEd discounts the heat pump and Nicor Gas discounts the high-efficiency furnace on the same invoice, $225 at 97% AFUE or $150 at 95% AFUE, or $275 and $200 with a qualifying smart thermostat.
Why does the ComEd tier depend on heating tons instead of cooling tons?
In northern Illinois the heating load is larger than the cooling load, so heat pumps are sized and rated on heating capacity. ComEd sets the tier the same way, which is why a properly sized cold-climate system often lands in the top tier.
